In July 2023, David P. Cline was elected President of the Congress of History of San Diego and Imperial Counties as it embarked on a final year of review in preparation for, sadly, sunsetting the organization. Founded in 1966, the Congress was a networking organization that brought together representatives of organizations, groups, museums, archives, and individuals that strive to preserve, educate about, honor, and interpret regional history in California’s San Diego and Imperial Counties. Prior to COVID, the Congress produced a conference on local and regional history. Sadly the changing landscape of local, small-scale public history meant this venerable organization reached its end after nearly 60 years. The good news, is that the mantle is being borne by a thriving network of local historical societies, museums, and other public history venues throughout San Diego, among them The Center for Public and Oral History at San Diego State University.
